New Editions

Recently added a link on request to All Write Magazine, an Australian magazine for writers aged 25 and younger and which accepts submissions of poetry, stories and reviews. While checking out others in my GeoURL neighbourhood, I discovered the
Science Fiction Writers Resource Guide and have since added a link to the guide also.

ResearchBuzz arrived this morning and in it a review of OneLook's Reverse Dictionary. Still in Beta, the reverse dictionary can find a word to match your definition, help group similar words or concepts, generate crossword answers and answer basic questions. Tara Calishain from ResearchBuzz noted that some results contain words that are not 'work-friendly.' Not all results are quite what you might expect, for example when I entered 'thing you push on a bicycle', 'pedal' was not in the top 200 responses but 'funkadelic compilations' came in at number 35. Generates lots of cool and unusual words, so it's a fun resource if you like cool and unusual words. I discovered that there is such a thing as a chomskybot (Wikipedia) today and because of a related Wikipedia entry, found myself searching for A.L.I.C.E. the chatterbot. A.L.I.C.E. Artificial Intelligence Foundation is where I caught up with chatterbot A.L.I.C.E and had a bit of a talk. I've now added a link to the OneLook Reverse Dictionary to my writing links page.

Reasons To Be Late For Work -

Sleeping in, dog following me, heavy showers or, this morning, witnessing Brad and Fiona Marry in the Morning on Channel Nine/WIN's The Today Show.

Just Looking For Another Girl...

Boot, Ripper and I walked to Doonies along the river and under the rainclouds yesterday. Agreed to have Jess and Josh after school, listened to Boot's Streets CD in Rod's car while Erin was driving, paid bills, collected the mail, shopped for Cruskits and apples and heard Billy Bragg singing 'A New England' at the checkout of the small Augusta supermarket.

Job Security vs Link Longevity

The New York Times Link Generator by Aaron Swartz generates links that won't rot your blog. I think I'll find this handy for my RetGen blog in particular. I read about the generator at Michael Hanscom's Eclecticism blog ('Fight Link Rot', November 17, 2003). Came across Hanscom's blog after reading the Seattle Post-Intelligencer article 'Microsoft fires worker over weblog' (October 30, 2003), which was referred to in Blogger Support's 'How Not to Get Fired Because of Your Blog.'

Meatspace

Distracted myself at GeoURL today and accidentally updated my public transport stop with a new GeoURL link, forgetting that I'd need to then upload the new stylesheet to match (I've been working on a few changes) and therefore all the rest of my pages that link to that stylesheet. Ooops. Not so distracted that I didn't notice that code GeoURL provides included the link title text, "check out my neighbors in meatspace." Metaspace? Or vegetarian-free zone?

Sunny today so I hopped on the trampoline for a bit... good to have a trampoline where you work!

Square Rooted or Irrationally Yours

You are √2

You are in good company, many other square roots are also irrational numbers. Just by being a square root you have been branded a radical. You are considered very attractive, especially by Europeans (at least on paper.)

You fear that a relationship with another √2 may somehow end up complex and ultimately imaginary. In reality, only another √2 will make you whole.

Your lucky number is approximately 1.41421356

What Irrational Number Are You?

Found this via Owen Massey's Added Entries and he found it via some other blogs... I have no idea how to reference this kind of stuff but Added Entries shows a good way of going about it.

Lost Highways

According to an article at WikiTravel about 'Driving in Australia':

In Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales and large parts of South Australia and Queensland almost all the roads are reliable and in good condition, and there are plenty of towns, farms and passing motorists to give directions and aid to the bewildered or lost. Once you leave these areas the quality and repair of the roads drops dramatically, as does the number of people using them.

Unless you're travelling from Perth to sunny Augusta, of course. Or north from Perth to Carnarvon on the Great North West Hwy, or... Come to Western Australia, we really do care about the lost and bewildered!

Guess that's the great thing about Wiki-type resources, when I have the time maybe I can edit the article.

Guest House

Still working out where everything is after the renovations - where to switch on lights, stick the rubbish, hang out washing, leave the bread board, have a cuppa without spilling it on new furniture. We have three (very welcome) extras and the house is as new to us as it is to them, so I'm kinda feeling like a guest too.

Marking Too Much Time

Enjoyed the first night of ABCTV's mini-series Marking Time. Erin and Rod are home. Boot and Keziah saw a possum with a baby while camping out Boranup Forest way. We still haven't shifted. I guess I'll unpack my pyjamas again.

Around and About

People going everywhere - Megan, Macka and Callum will be arriving in WA from Tasmania tomorrow, Erin and Rod will be in town from Geraldton from Tuesday and Andrew rang yesterday to let us know he's operating a dredge in Darwin. He's never travelled to the Northern Territory before so he's not too sorry to be there with only a day's notice. The only family members not on the move are those of us who should have shifted a week/month ago and Rosie the dog, who isn't happy about sleeping in the house and staying in the backyard, despite an operation on her leg last week.

Bubbling Over

Quiet day today, finished reading Bubbles in Trouble by Sarah Strohmeyer. Bubbles Yablonsky is a hairdresser/journalist who, of course, solves mysteries to get a good story. The novels are light and funny with lots of action and some unique female characters. Not quite what I was looking for while I was in the bookshop but once I start reading it's very easy not to stop.

Slow Moving

Finally back from my big RP fest - four capital cities, lots of yummy vegetarian food, a barbecue in Wilcannia, bonfire in Galston, Savings brand smoked oysters in Dubbo and a latte in Melbourne. I still haven't shifted, so I've unpacked my backpack in the same place I packed it. A sunny day at Perth Domestic, the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge rising to my right as I approach town, make me glad of a holiday and glad to be home.
