Big Words

Recently Macka and Megan were discussing antidisestablishmentarianism. Not the political philosophy but the word itself - is it the longest? This article from The Straight Dope suggests another longest word but it's not one that I could say without taking a breath or two.

Library Love

'Life, libraries and the pursuit of happiness' from Owen Massey links to lots of interesting (if you're into libraries) links to stuff about libraries and librarians. If only libraries weren't so quiet, I wouldn't get a headache when I visit. Maybe a sound library is somewhere I should go.

To Why Laughing

'Senior Laugh Lines Do Smooth Out' (September 5, HealthDayNews article at the Austin American-Statesman). For a moment I thought maybe the laughter lines I've developed might disappear but it's not true. I did discover that while my sense of humour might change, and I might get even fewer jokes than I do now, if I find something funny when I'm old, it'll still make me laugh. Actually, I don't know any old people who don't laugh, so I didn't fear a lack of laughter in my later life. The research was carried out by Praphiba Shammi from the University of Toronto's Baycrest Center for Geriatric Care and colleague Donald Stuss. A psychologist from the University of Maryland, Robert Provine, was quoted in the article as saying, "If you want to laugh more, spend time with friends. Don't worry about humor." I think I can manage that.

Weird Mob

Blogger lost my post and I'm not stoked. My ISP's doing a major server upgrade this week and so I don't suppose my service will be that crash hot from tomorrow either (at least for a little while).

Visited Join Me today, which was a laugh - a guy called Danny Wallace has asked people to join him. And they have.

Finally looked into flash mobs at sites like flashmob.info. Started in New York City, these quick meetings in public places now happen in lots of cities, including Sydney and Melbourne. Flash Mob London SoHo link to groups all over Europe, including the Italian Mob. The Italian site's actually called Flash Mob Fantasma Formaggino, which sounds less funny and more fun to me.

Picture This

At last I've discovered a free program that will make digital photos smaller for the Web. The latest TuDogs newsletter included a review of PicSizer, a program that will resize one or more graphic files at a time for use on the Web or in e-mails. Not flash but very easy to use. I've resized my pic of the Nannup daffodils and now added a pic of the blowhole at Carnarvon on my blog pics page too.
